Folder Sync

Modified on Tue, 27 Dec, 2022 at 2:08 PM

Folder sync allows you to convert and/or copy content to folders and external hard drives, for backup as well as archiving in multiple resolutions. Destinations directories must be kept online.

When content is archived in multiple resolutions, Emby apps will automatically choose the version that is most efficient to play. This will help relieve stress on your server's CPU by not having to transcode.

Installation

To install folder sync, open the Emby Server Plugins Menu.
Click the Catalog Tab at the top of the page to access to Emby Plugin catalog. Folder sync should be available in both the he Top Plugins row and the bottom Sync row. Click it to open the Install page. Select the current Release and then the Install button.

Restart Emby Server.

After restart open the plugin menu to access folder sync.

Add Folders

Once installed, it's time to start adding Folders. These folders are destinations that you'd like to sync to, such as an external hard drive or network share.

Add a folder by entering the path and giving it a display name. You can also choose whether or not to limit sync access to specific users.

Ready to Sync/Download to:

All folders added to the plugin setup become available to use in the UI under the Download to: menu any time you use the 3 dot menu.  You can choose individual media items, choose multiple or you can choose a to convert/copy a full library.

The following picture shows the menu popup after clicking the 3 dot menu on Movies after hovering the mouse over it.

After selecting the Download to: menu you can fill in the next screen to setup a "Folder Sync" job.

720p Conversion is the name of the folder set directly in the plugin configuration. I've chose to use the Movile Profile with a 4 Mpbs limit on size.  This will create media files that will play back on all devices without the need to transcode.  I've skipped the "Download unplayed videos only" as I want to process all Movie files.  I selected "Automatically download new content" so anytime I add additional media it will be processed in the future.

Multiple versions of the media will be available on the detail screen as shown below:

Playback

Once synced, Emby apps will automatically use the additional media sources when possible. For example, suppose you have a high bitrate movie that requires transcoding to Roku. By syncing to a folder and selecting a conversion profile that is compatible with Roku, the Roku app can then direct stream the synced version rather than transcoding the original.
